Four athletes, including Olympic silver medallist P.V. Sindhu, gymnast Dipa Karmakar, shooter Jitu Rai and Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi Malik have recently been awarded with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award by President Pranab Mukherjee in New Delhi.
Fifteen sportspersons were awarded with the Arjuna Award and three with the Dhyan Chand Award.
Besides, the Punjabi University of Patiala was awarded the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) Trophy 2015-16.
Apart from a medal and a citation, awardees of Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna will receive a cash prize of Rs.7.5 lakh each. The Arjuna, Dronacharya and Dhyan Chand awardees will receive statuettes, certificates and cash prize of Rs.5 lakh each.
About Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award:
The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna or Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in Sports and Games
is the highest sporting honour in India. It is awarded yearly by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. As of 2016, the award comprises a medallion, a certificate and a cash prize of ₹7.5 lakh.
The first recipient of the award was Chess Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand, who was honoured for the performance in the year 1991-92.
